Being involved in a car accident is scary and has the potential to be life-changing if there are injuries. Many people survive car accidents, although complications still arise from the stress. It’s common for individuals to suffer from psychological trauma, emotional distress, and prolonged anxiety. Financial troubles are even more common. Injuries that may have seemed simple at first have a way of sneaking up on people, costing them thousands of dollars in medical expenses. In short, car accidents leave people with massive debt, debilitating injuries, and apprehension. And of course, car accidents kill.

If you have been involved in a car accident in Northeast Philadelphia, you don’t need to feel alone and hopeless. If the accident was due to negligence or drunk driving, it’s possible that you’re eligible for financial compensation from the liable parties that will help pay for expenses related to your injury and the accident. In our experience, clients who pursue litigation and receive damages feel as though they can finally move on after the event and have closure. Compensation may not be able to immediately take away pain from the car accident, but it certainly helps with getting back on your feet financially.

Pennsylvania Auto Insurance Terms

Those who drive in Northeast Philadelphia are of course subject to rules and regulations of Pennsylvania insurance. We believe it is important to have a decent understanding of insurance terms in case you’re involved in a car accident.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

This is exactly what is sounds like. Should you be hurt in an accident, this insurance policy covers the costs of your injury within your plan. The minimum needed is $5,000, but you can set the amount to your liking. Under Pennsylvania’s no-fault system, PIP covers your injury even if you are the one at fault. This policy is mandatory in Pennsylvania.

Liability Coverage

The two types of liability coverage are:

  1. Bodily Injury Liability – This covers the expenses of someone’s injury if you are found to be liable. The minimum is $15,000.
  2. Property Damage Liability  – This covers property damage if you are liable. The minimum is $5,000.

Full Tort

You have “purchased” the right to assert a claim for any damages you are legally entitled to claim from an automobile accident. I say “purchased” because you have to pay extra to assert this right. In my experience, it’s not that much more to purchase Full Tort than it is to purchase Limited Tort. It’s your decision. You can find out the difference in your monthly or yearly premium and decide whether you want Full Tort or Limited Tort. I recommend Full Tort.

If you have Full Tort, you have an unlimited right to seek compensation for pain and suffering, embarrassment, loss of enjoyment of life, and what are described as “non-economic damages.”
