In light of the recent blizzard, the Heslin Law Firm would like to take this opportunity to remind you of some Bucks County snow safety tips to help you deal with extreme winter weather:

  • Clear the snow from your driveway, sidewalk and any other walkways as soon as possible after a snowstorm. Doing so will ensure you can exit your home and that people can enter in the event of an emergency.
  • Consider investing in a snowblower to make the task of clearing large amounts of snow less difficult.
  • If you are elderly or disabled, make sure you have someone lined up to clear the snow for you. Don’t have a relative, friend or neighbor who is available to do it? There are plenty of local businesses that offer snow removal services.
  • When shoveling, take frequent breaks to give your body a rest. Overexertion can lead to a heart attack. If you feel unwell while shoveling, stop right away and seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Never drink alcohol before or soon after shoveling snow, as this will impair your ability to judge how cold your body is.
  • When going out in the snow during the day, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun glare.
  • Dress appropriately for the weather when going outside in cold temperatures. Put on a hat, scarf, coat and gloves, and always wear water-resistant, non-slip boots or shoes when out in snowy conditions.
  • Be sure you have all of the essential supplies prepared when a snowstorm is in the forecast. These include first aid supplies, a flashlight with extra batteries, extra food, a three-day supply of water, extra blankets and snow shovels. Also, prepare medications ahead of time for everyone in your family.

By following these snow safety tips in Bucks County, you’ll decrease your risk of contracting hypothermia or getting hurt during times of extreme winter weather.
