Wednesday morning around 4 a.m, one person died and another was seriously injured after a head-on accident outside Northeast High School in Philadelphia.

Police arrived on the scene and said a 21-year old woman was heading northbound along Algon Avenue and collided head on with a vehicle traveling eastbound on Cottman Avenue. The impact caused the woman to be ejected and thrown underneath the vehicle.

After being rushed to Aria Torresdale Hospital, she was pronounced dead several hours later.

The other vehicle went through a fence and ended up on the lawn outside of Northeast High School. The driver of the vehicle was a 66-year old man. He was taken to the hospital with a broken neck and was listed in critical but stable condition.

The exact cause of the accident was being investigated, but police say one of the drivers may have run a red light.

Because of the crash, all lanes between Algon and Summerdale were subsequently closed.
