- Know the steps to take if you hydroplane – If you feel your vehicle starting to hydroplane, remove your foot from the gas pedal, gently press the brake and then hold the steering wheel straight until your car gets its traction back. Keep in mind that the risk of hydroplaning is the greatest during the first ten minutes of a rain storm, as the water mixes with the oil on the road and leads to very slippery driving conditions.
