Bucks County Car Accident Attorney

According to the Federal Highway Administration, over 1.2 million weather-related car accidents occur each year. Of these crashes, 46% happen when it is raining and 73% happen when pavement is wet. With these statistics in mind, our Bucks County car accident attorney encourages you to refresh your memory on how to drive safely when April showers strike. Here are a few of our best tips for traveling by car on rainy days:

  1. Maximize your visibility – To ensure that you can see the road in front of you and other drivers can easily spot your vehicle, be sure to turn on your low-beam highlights when driving during both day and night.
  2. Watch out for standing water – When there’s water on the roads, it’s very important to avoid driving through deep puddles. Doing so can flood your engine and leave you with an inoperable car. Furthermore, if you encounter a flooded street, follow the popular saying “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Even if the water doesn’t seem that deep, remember that looks can be deceiving and it only takes six inches of fast-moving water to sweep away your car.
  3. Look out for signs that it’s time for a brake repair – One of the easiest things you can do to reduce your risk of getting into a rainy day crash is to keep your brakes in good working condition. If your brakes make a squeaking or grinding sound or your vehicle seems to be pulling in one direction, have your vehicle inspected ASAP.
  4. Up your following distance – When roads are wet, your vehicle may need up to three times as much distance to stop as it does on dry pavement, so you should increase your following distance accordingly.
  5. Know the steps to take if you hydroplane – If you feel your vehicle starting to hydroplane, remove your foot from the gas pedal, gently press the brake and then hold the steering wheel straight until your car gets its traction back. Keep in mind that the risk of hydroplaning is the greatest during the first ten minutes of a rain storm, as the water mixes with the oil on the road and leads to very slippery driving conditions.
