4 Motorcycle Safety Precautions Every Springtime Rider Should Take

Bucks County Motorcycle Accident Lawyer

Now that temperatures are starting to rise here in Bucks County, many people are choosing to travel by motorcycle to take advantage of the warm air. If you decide to join the club, it’s important to follow a few motorcycle safety procedures to keep yourself and others on the road out of harm’s way. Here’s what our Bucks County motorcycle accident lawyer recommends:

  1. Look out for potholes – Wintertime snow and ice can take a toll on roads, so you should be on high alert for deep cracks and potholes while riding your bike in the spring. If you encounter one, resist the urge to slam on the brakes, as doing so might damage your front-end suspension. Furthermore, never swerve to miss a pothole because this may result in your losing control of the vehicle. Instead, slow down as gradually as possible to minimize damage to yourself and your bike.
  2. Expect rain – While many spring days are sunny and nice, some are bound to be rainy. With this in mind, you should always check the weather forecast before going for a ride. If you decide to take your bike for a spin after a rainstorm, beware of puddles – they can cause you to hydroplane and lose control of your bike, or they can cover up treacherous potholes.
  3. Make sure you’re visible – When riding a motorcycle, stay away from the classic biker garb of all black, since wearing dark colors makes it difficult for other drivers to see you. To make yourself highly visible, wear bright colors and always use your headlights, even during the day. You may even consider painting your bike an easy-to-spot color for maximum visibility!
  4. Ride defensively – Although it’s possible to weave in and out of traffic on a small motorcycle, that doesn’t mean you should do it. In reality, going out of the designated lanes is extremely dangerous. Therefore, you should always ride with traffic just as you would in a car and avoid risky maneuvers. In addition, don’t forget that motorcycles can be hard to spot, so don’t hesitate to blow your horn if you’re unsure if another driver sees you.
